Sanctity of Life Platform Plank

 

We believe that Human Life is sacred and that it deserves to be protected and nurtured at all states of life, from conception through natural death.

We believe that healthcare is first, an individual responsibility, and second, a state issue, under Article 10 of the United States Constitution.  Power to govern healthcare, including reproductive services, is not granted to the federal government in that document.  The Supreme Court agreed in its Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision in June of 2022.

We will work with our state legislators to refine and improve current state laws regarding abortion, with the goal of minimizing and/or eliminating the unwarranted and inhumane practice of terminating the life of an unborn child, in so far as it is humanly possible in a secular and religiously diverse society.  We are making progress.

We are also committed to work towards the cessation of funding for abortions by any level of government – local, state, or federal. 

The Right to Life precedes the Right to Liberty.

 Adam and Eve were first given Life in the Garden of Eden before they were given the Liberty to choose their destiny. 

“We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” (Declaration of Independence, 4 July 1776)

The Right to Due Process and Equal Protection Under the Law. 

An individual who is genetically distinct from any other human being is created at the moment of conception.  The laws of nature and inheritance determine that such an individual is human and only human, and it cannot become anything other than human.  Therefore, it becomes naturally subjected to the laws of the nation in which it resides, or the nation in which it’s mother resides. 

No State shall “deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” (U.S. Constitution, Amendment 14, Section 1)

The Alaska State Constitution Affirms the Right to Life and the Right to Equal Protection Under the Law.

“This constitution is dedicated to the principles that all persons have a natural right to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and the enjoyment of the rewards of their own industry; that all persons are equal and entitled to equal rights, opportunities, and protection under the law; and that all persons have corresponding obligations to the people and to the State. (Alaska State Constitution, Article 1, Section 1).

Alaska State’s laws are very specific about when, where, why, and how abortions may be performed within the State, including but not limited to:

  • Must be performed by a state licensed physician;
  • Person requesting the abortion must reside within state boundaries for over 30 days before procedure;
  • Minors must have either the written approval of parents or a judicial bypass ruling before an abortion can be performed;
  • Informed consent must be shown;
  • Partial birth procedures are class C felonies unless it is performed in an emergency situation for a specific medically justified reason;
  • Medical personnel cannot be forced to participate in an abortion procedure;
  • Civil and criminal penalties are provided for violations of these statutes.

Abortions are Declining in Alaska

As of 2023, the population of Alaska is estimated to be 733,046.  The number of legal abortions performed is 1,222.  That is a rate of .017% and it has been declining since 2019.  Compare Alaska’s rate to that of Florida, which is 19.1% and is the highest rate in the United States.
